HUD grants FOIA request but now wants the documents back

One of President Obama’s first acts after taking office was to issue a remarkably strong affirmation of the Freedom of Information Act.

“The Freedom of Information Act should be administered with a clear presumption: In the face of doubt, openness prevails. The government should not keep information confidential merely because public officials might be embarrassed by disclosure, because errors and failures might be revealed, or because of speculative or abstract fears,” the president said. “All agencies should adopt a presumption in favor of disclosure, in order to renew their commitment to the principles embodied in FOIA, and to usher ...

GIJC begins

More than 1,000 journalists from 120 countries are expected to attend the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Lillehammer, Norway, from Oct. 7-11, including the Workshop's Chuck Lewis and David Donald, who will moderate panels and teach.

Donald to train journalists at GIJC

Data Editor David Donald will do a series of trainings at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference next month in Norway. The idea is to take data journalists already comfortable in basic data analysis and advance their skills — and hence — insight into their data through the use of inferential statistics. 

Lewis begins fellowship in October

Executive Editor Charles Lewis will be a Visiting Fellow at Oxford University's Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism from October through early December, researching the possibility of a new multidisciplinary academic field he calls "Accountability Studies,"and more broadly, the "efficacy and potential of increased journalistic and academic data, research and reporting collaboration, in the context of credible, accountability information."
